FAQS

WHY CHOOSE THE SHIMANO XT DERAILLEUR WITH CASSETTE 11-36G?

This has been the shifting choice the world over for many, including myself. It's always easy to find Shimano parts - they're extremely reliable and external cassettes deliver instant and efficient power.  The 11-36 offers a wide gear range that will you get atop of mountains.

WHAT IS A SCHLUMPF MOUNTAIN DRIVE GEARING SYSTEM?

The Schlumpf drive is an ultra-thin planetary gearing system located at the right end of the bottom bracket, between the bottom bracket and right crank arm. Handcycles are a popular application allowing you to shift either at full speed as well as at a standstill. The Schlumpf drive more than doubles your gear range, mostly without any overlap.

WHAT IS SHIMANO ALFINE INTERNAL GEARING?

The Alfine is an internal hub. One of the biggest advantages of the internal gear hub is that all the moving parts responsible for shifting are completely contained in a sealed unit – the hub. This means they’re completely protected from water, dirt, road salt, and grime. An exposed derailleur runs the risk of being bent or broken, and a derailleur hanging down from your dropouts is fairly prone to be knocked out of adjustment. An internal hub, on the other hand, is pretty difficult to damage. Internal gear hubs are easier to maintain than standard derailleur systems. With a derailleur and cassette system, you have to regularly clean your rear cogs and derailleur to keep them shifting smoothly. Also, with an internally geared hub, you can shift gears while stationary. This is great for downshifting on an uphill.

WHAT IS A ROHLOFF SPEEDHUB?

The high-end internal Rohloff speedhub is more expensive but it's reliable, has perfect single gear ratios, a wide range of gears, low maintenance, easy operation, and allows for stationary shifting. Along with the Schlumpf MD, you have all your bases covered.

WHAT IS AN ELECTRIC ASSIST?

An electric bicycle, also known as an e-bike or e-assist, is a bicycle with an integrated electric motor that can be used for propulsion. E-bikes use rechargeable batteries and the lighter varieties can travel up to 25 to 32 km/h (16 to 20 mph), depending on the laws of the country in which they are sold, while the more high-powered varieties can often do in excess of 45 km/h (28 mph). We recommend a minimum of 500 watts for the Explorer and 250 watts for the XCR.

WHAT BRAND OF ELECTRIC ASSIST DO YOU USE AND IS IT PEDAL ASSIST?

Bafang - http://www.szbaf.com/

Yes, we only offer pedal-assist not on-demand power with a throttle.

WHAT WOULD I USE THE ELECTRIC ASSIST FOR?

The e-assist kicks in at the power percentage you are comfortable with and assists you on your ride. Electric-assist gives you the ability to go on longer rides, up steeper hills, at a consistently faster pace, and makes it easier to keep up with able-bodied friends. This gives you the ability to ride your bike to the trailhead instead of drive. Total independence! Testing has indicated that battery life would range from approximately 12, 18, 22 and 36 miles respectively depending on battery size. Electric-assist comes stock on both the Jeetrike and FAT Explorer. You can purchase an e-assist with either the Explorer III or the XCR. We recommend a minimum of 250W for the XCR and 500W for the Explorer III.

* If you purchase the electric assist on the XCR and Explorer you cannot purchase the Schlumpf drive and vice versa. Unless you are purchasing the Jeetrike. This is the only aMTB we offer with both Schlumpf and electric assist. With the Schlumpf drive, you have the ability to use a wide range of gears or have fewer gears but have electric assist on demand.

WHAT ARE THE PROS OF YOUR SHIFTING OPTIONS?

Shimano Alfine 8 + Schlumpf Mountain-Drive: Internal hub with planetary gearing system.

Shimano XT derailleur, XT cassette 11-36T + 3-speed crankset: External cassette and the ability to fix on the spot.

Shimano XT derailleur, XT cassette 11-36T + Schlumpf MD: Offers nearly two and half times the gear range allowing for a much higher spin ratio and stationary shifting capability.

Shimano Alfine 11G + Schlumpf MD: An Internal hub that allows for a bigger range of gearing and stationary shifting.
